Dental hygienists meticulously clean patients’ teeth and are specially trained to provide deep and highly effective removal of plaque. This is an essential part of protecting your oral health and ensuring you have strong teeth for life.
Regular visits to the hygienist help prevent periodontal (gum) disease, bleeding gums and dental decay. Your hygienist will also provide advice on diet and the most effective ways of preventing dental decay. With careful attention you will not be one of the 19 out of 20 people who suffer from gum disease at some point in their life.
Most patients will have undergone a dental cleaning as it is incorporated into most check-ups. No matter how good your dental hygiene routine is, there is always the chance that tartar will build up in hidden crevices without you knowing, which is why dental cleaning is always beneficial.
First your dentist will use a periodontal scaler to scrape away any plaque or tartar above the gum line, although in more advanced cases an ultrasonic instrument may be required to dislodge more troublesome tartar. The dentist will proceed to clean your teeth with a combination of vibrations and a fine mist of water that removes plaque and helps rinse your teeth. Another instrument will be used to provide suction and remove excess water in your mouth. This process may be a little uncomfortable but will soon be over and then it will simply be a case of rinsing y0ur mouth out.
As you spit you may notice a change of colour in your saliva but this is nothing to worry about as this is just the tartar you are spitting out and a few rinses will soon see the last of it.
Tartar may build up again if you are not careful but as long as you visit your local dentist regularly they will help you keep your teeth clean and tartar free.
